What exactly turns an ordinary life into something epic? I mean, like Lord Of The Rings epic?
In LOTR, it all started with an ordinary little guy being coerced into a trip he didn’t want to take, with people he didn’t know, to do dangerous stuff he didn’t want to do. Or even know HOW to do.
All the epicness of this story comes from the little things he did along the way. To him, they weren’t epic things – they were whatever he felt was right and necessary at the time. Often, he had very little time to make these choices, and went on pure instinct.
These moments built up and built up, causing all kinds of things that otherwise wouldn’t have happened, preventing things that otherwise would have, and stringing together one by one, like beads on a necklace, to create a whole story.
It’s the big, showy, epic story most people pay attention to – not the individual moments that are the meat and bones of it. Without those moments, there is no story to tell.
I try to remember this when I wish my life were an epic adventure that turns the tide and saves the world, because maybe it already is.
That goes for you, too.
