Whatever happiness is in the world
has arisen from a wish for the welfare of others;
whatever misery there is
has arisen from indulging selfishness.
It’s been pointed out to me that Nelly Furtado sings in Spanish. I knew this, and I can recognize Spanish when I hear it – but Nelly was doing some kind of fast “rap” thing, repeating similar sounds over and over, none of which were recognizable to me as any language I’m familiar with. It made absolutely no sense to me or to my husband.
Maybe it was the TV. Maybe it was bad hearing on our part. Maybe she was making up words, using some kind of slang I don’t know about, or singing through a sucky sound system. What I do know is, we didn’t understand a word she was singing. I wanted to clarify this in case anyone thought the conversation was racist, which it definitely was not.
Hubby: What is she SAYING? Is she even speaking English?
Me: No idea. (I have impaired hearing, so I REALLY had no idea.)
Hubby: In the words of Samuel L. Jackson – “English, mother***er! Do you speak it???”
(At this point our cat, Cookie, started clawing the inside of a cardboard box)
Hubby: I know how you feel, Cookie.
Me: What do you mean?
Hubby: I assume she’s trying to claw her ears out.
