When I was growing up, women who went out in public wearing shorts, swimsuit tops or rollers in their hair were considered trashy and indecent, especially in small towns. The same standard applied to men who wore shorts and sleeveless t-shirts or went shirtless altogether. It simply wasn’t done if you wanted people to think well of you. Nowadays that mode of dress isn’t considered a big deal because just about everyone does it. But there’s a (new?) trend I really don’t understand – women wearing actual pajamas in public.
One trip to our local grocery store treats us to the spectacle of grown women (yes, plural) shopping in full bedtime regalia – pajamas, house slippers and robe. As I said to my sister yesterday – seriously, WTF??? How did this get started? How effing lazy do you have to be to say to yourself, “I need groceries, but I don’t feel like getting dressed”?
Next thing you know, everyone will be wearing pajamas in public and buying formal wear for bed. I can hear it now: “Okay, kids – it’s bedtime. Everyone put on your tuxedos and ball gowns. Be sure to do your hair, and don’t forget the ties, cufflinks and jewelry!”
