Come on … every adult who’s ever worked in an office has seen how truly careless and nonchalant employees are with customer information. Had I been the criminal type, I could have taken advantage of literally hundreds of opportunities over the years by simply reaching over a counter or strolling by an unattended desk and picking up documents belonging to fellow customers – some with charge cards/driver’s licenses attached. This is no exaggeration. Because of that, I’m very, very careful when filling things out in offices and such. I hang on to that paper for dear life until I see it go to a more secure location, away from snooping eyes.
If they toss it onto a nearby pile or something, I say, “Excuse me, but people can see my information from here. I know, because I can see it myself. Please put that somewhere safe.” I don’t even care if they get snippy with me. I know, I know … no one’s information is really secure anymore. Anyone can take whatever they want whenever they want, and not a damn thing you can do about it. But why tempt fate? If you have a chance to take extra care with your sensitive information, do it! It’s never a bad idea.
